(Not So) Happy Ending
This story is a somewhat cute one. A new girl moves into a town she has no contacts in. She is shunned from the community and branded an outcast, until a boy who seems to be utterly perfect for her comes up and offers her his friendship. Will it lead to a happily ever after, or a not so happy ending?
Chapter 1: It was only a kiss
Could you put yourself in another's shoes? I can't, but I can feel for others. I knew these two people once, and what happened was that- Well, nevermind, I'll let you read for yourself.
-----
She walked up to the school slowly, her first day since she moved. Her heart pounding, backpack heavy, and sweating underneath the jacket she always wore. She wasn't sweating because it was cold, it was winter of course, but because even in this calm, snowy, January air, she was still too nervous to chill. She wasn't bad looking at all. Actually she was pretty. Nearly perfectly clear, pale skin along with her blue eyes, and dark hair. She dressed darkly, not exposing much skin like other 11th grade girls. You could hardly ever even see the back of her hands. She walked up the stairs to her first class, clutching a book over her chest. The first day seemed to last forever, everyone shooting glances from across the room at her, "the new kid". It didn't happen until she was in lunch, though.
"Hey, you're the new girl, right?" she heard a boy say behind her, and turned towards him. "Garnet? We have Calc together." He paused for a moment. "And Gym, English, World History, Art.." He smiled shyly. She looked at him and noticed he wore clothes similar to hers. Long hair, one headphone in, black pants, a sweatshirt, and a t-shirt underneath with some snappy comment. It was like looking in some kind of mirror, but with an opposite gender. He was holding a book in his hand, she saw. After looking at it for a few seconds, she noticed it was the same book she had, and her eyes widened. He looked at the book and let out a small nervous laugh. "Yeah, I was surprised when I found out you had the same book as me. Creepy, huh? I'm Phoenix." He held out his hand, and let out a sweet smile. She looked up at him and returned his smile, a slight blush reddening her cheeks. She grabbed his hand and shook.
"Glad to meet you, Phoenix." She said, smiling. Her heart swelled up with excitement and happiness. She had a friend in her new, frozen over world. Not only did he seem sweet, but they worked well great.
After lunch, they had study together. They liked all the same bands, had similar pasts and problems, and even lived close.
"So, want me to walk you home after school, Garnet?"
She choked a bit and looked at him in surprise. "Really?"
"Well, Yeah. I mean, it's along my home route anyways. Who wouldn't like getting walked home?" He said with a smile. "I figured I should ask. It's cold and all you have is that sweater."
"So? All you have is that one, silly." She remarked, poking fun at him.
"Well, me being warm isn't as important to me as you being warm is." He said, with more of a straight face, a smile still sneaking through, but slightly.
"Well... You stay warm too. No taking off your jacket; it's snowing outside." as soon as she finished, the bell rang, and they got up.
"And now it's time to go home." He stood up and offered her his hand. She looked at it for a moment or two, then smiled and took it, pulling herself up and walking outside. Both of them blushed several shades of red on the way home, holding hands. When they walked up to her door, she turned and sighed, then let go of his hand.
"Well, here we are. This is my lovely..." She looked back at her house. "... not yet fully unpacked abode."
"Yeah, I can see boxes through the window." He said, standing on his toes and peering out, brushing snow-covered, dark hair out of his face. He looked back at her and his cheek blushed up a bit. "Well, Garnet... See you tomorrow." He finished, then pushed close to her in a kiss. After it was over, he turned and rushed off, leaving Garnet at her doorstep, blushing and staring after him. She let out a small sigh, and turned around to go inside.

Chapter 2: Through His Eyes
What really had just happened? Did he really just kiss her? Yes he had, and for some reason, Phoenix turned and ran away. "Too shy and scared to face the girl you love?" He softly asked himself. His feet stopped and he closed his eyes. Breathing deeply, he looked back at his tracks that went around the corner. The snow had started to fill them already. Standing there, chills ran up his back.
The blush was fading from his cheeks, and the cold was getting to him. He must have been standing there for a long time, because when he looked back to her house, the footprints were gone, and his fingers were numb. He looked at his hand and remembered how they held hands. "Well then, I guess it's time to get over my shyness, and face my fear." He turned and walked back to her house, walked up the stairs, and rose his hand to knock on the door. Before he even had a chance, the door opened and she ran out, wrapping her arms around him tightly, and burying her face in his shoulder.
"You ran away from me!" She scolded, jokingly. "Now I've gotta hold you to make sure you don't run away again." She leaned away, looking at him. She noticed, very quickly, that he seemed frozen to the bone. Her face turned a little more towards worry, and she grabbed his cold hand, pulled him inside, and put him on the couch near a small white metal heater. She walked out of the room, leaving him there. Scooting over to the heater, he placed his hand over it. After a minute or two, he decided to place his hand on it. Garnet walked back into the room and hit his hand. "Don't touch that! You'll hurt yourself. Now," She handed him a mug of hot cocoa. "Drink up. You're still freezing."
"Thanks, Garnet." He said, and looked at her smiling. "This is really nice."
"Well.." She blushed, and looked away, towards the TV. "I should put on a movie." She got up and scurried to the Tv, found a movie and popped it in. After returning to him, she sat next to him and curled into him warmly. He smiled when she placed her head on his shoulder, and pulled his arm around her. They sat and cuddled, until he was warm.
"You look cute when you're cuddling with me." Phoenix said to her, smiling.
She returned a smile, and they both blushed. "Well, if I go off of what you say, I always look pretty."
"Well, you do. you're a beautiful, adorable, cute and cuddly, amazing, caring, funny, wonderful .... Adorable, smart, loving, adorable girl!"
"You said adorable three times."
"Only three? Damn, I was supposed to say it four times!" He said jokingly, and smiled at her.
She blushed, looking down. Fiddling with her fingers for a few minutes, she remembered something. "Hey, you never went home, so wouldn't your family be worried?"
"Nope. They don't worry about me much after school." He looked at her, staring at him, and needed something to break the tension. Something, anything to get the awkward silence to disappear. "Wanna sip?" He said, holding the cup to her.
She blushed, and held the mug, taking a sip. "Mmmm..." Her bright blue eyes looked back at him. "You better not have a cold, Jack Frost Jr."
"I hope I don't, 'cuz if I do I'll have to stay home and I wont see you tomorrow, with all your beauty."
She blushed again, and smiled. "Well, I was thinking because you just offered me some of your drink, and I could get sick too."
"Oh, good! Then I can come over and hang out anyways, since we'd both be sick!"
They laughed and cuddled more, watching the rest of the movie. Somewhere along the line, they must have fallen asleep, because Phoenix wakes up and looks outside, the night sky darkening the snowy clouds. He looks down at Garnet, who's asleep. "Awww. how cute!" He whispers, and then kisses her forehead. "Sweet dreams.... I love you."

Chapter 3: I'm your Guy
She woke up early, curled in a ball next to Phoenix. Looking up at his sleeping face, she smiled. Garnet got up and stretched, sighing and looking out the nearby window. The sun looked just a few minutes from rising, and the sky was turning from black to a blue-ish gray. Her stomach growled for what seemed like a full minute, and she sighed.
"Food.. I should make breakfast." She said to herself. Glancing over at Phoenix, she added, "for two." Walking into her kitchen, she saw a note leaning on her camera. She picked it up and read it to herself. "Bring a boy home?" ... She leaned down and wrote on the note: "No, I found him on the porch. Can I keep him? :)" Turning on the camera, she clicked on a timer, put the camera across the living room from Phoenix, and cuddled into his side again, until a flash went off. She kissed his cheek and smiled. moving back to the kitchen, she started making pancakes and toast, all preparations taking a few minutes. "I love pancakes." She said to herself, quietly.
From the doorway Phoenix's voice said, "Yeah, me too."
Garnet looked up at his sleepy face, as he yawned, and smiled towards him. "Good," he began, "then you can help me make them." She stuck out her tongue and laughed, to which he laughed with her. They finished breakfast, got ready for school, and walked hand in hand.
"So I was thinking," Phoenix started, interrupting whatever conversation they were in the middle of. "I kissed you, you kissed me, we cuddled and fell asleep, that means I'm your guy, right?" He finished, with a smile and a blush.
Garnet blushed as well, smiling and leaning her head on his shoulder. "Yeah.." She then leaned off of him and looked at his eyes, saying "Wait, that means I'm your girl, right?"
He laughed and smiled. "Don't be so silly. You've been the only girl for me since day one."
They walked into the school and a huge crowd greeted them with a mixture of stares.
Have you ever been looked at strangely? Sucks, don't it? Some of the people around them seemed disgusted, some mad, and one or two were jealous. The rest of the crowd didn't much seem to give a damn about them, as they ignored the crowd and walked into the hallway where their lockers were located. The hallways were nearly barren except three or four people standing in random spots, preparing for the day. When Garnet stopped at her locker, Phoenix stopped right beside her and started tinkering with the lock on the locker next to hers.
"Wait, wait, you have a locker next to mine?"
He laughed and replied, "No, no. I was here first. You have a locker next to mine."
"Fiiine," She said, rolling her eyes and kissing him softly. "then I have a locker next to you. See you later?"
"Yes'm."
Garnet walked away, and a girl across the hallway walked up to him. She snapped at him, in a somewhat annoying, high-pitched voice. "So, you're dating the new girl? Makes sense. You're a freak. The new girl's a freak too. I guess you weirdos congregate together don't you? You're such a cancer. Go and die freak. I hate weirdos, why can't you be normal? Losers."
Phoenix opened his mouth for a snappy response, but stopped himself.
"What'sa matter, cat got your tongue, freak?"
"Nah, I was just trying to find the best way to say 'bite me' in preppy bitch." Phoenix responded, with a sarcastic smile. Closing his locker, he walked away and into his home room, feeling victorious.
"Freaks die alone, asshole!" The girl yelled after him, not even denting his confidence.

Chapter 4: Crashing Down
One week later --
Well, pretty much the rest of the week was as nice for them as the first few days. They seemed close to inseparable, although Garnet did make Phoenix go home eventually. They seemed to fit together much more than most couples, clicking together instantly, like they'd known each other since first grade. Phoenix tried to keep her surprised, giving her gifts for no reason other than seeing her smile, or dragging her to the movies just to hold her hand at those scenes. A week of this and we arrive back in a morning, Phoenix walking up her stairs and knocking on the door. A nearby sleepy looking Garnet yawns and waves for him to come in, which he does.
"Hey Beautiful." He says, a light smile on his face, and a small blush from both the cold outside and the love in his heart
She raised an eyebrow at him, since she literally just had rolled out of bed. She shook the feeling and smiled, walking over to him and smiling, putting her arms around his neck, and hugging him tightly. He lightly gave her a small peck on her lips, and her cheeks blushed to match his. "Hey, do me a favor?"
"What is it sweetheart?" He responded, his smile widening.
"Make me some toast?" She said, holding up a floppy piece of white bread.
He laughed lightly, and made her toast. They got all bundled up for the snow and walked hand in hand to their school, the snow falling around them like the crystal tears of angels. It was a beautiful day so far. A light, pale snow had covered the streets and trees, and the cars had not yet made a filthy impact on the roads.
Almost at the school, Garnet piped in a quick question. "Hey, Phoenix, Do you think we'll be like this for a long time?"
He smiled, and nodded. "Yeah. Nothing could take me away from you. I'm here for you, whenever you need me. Remember that."
Walking into school, the normal crowd seemed to look at them differently. Some eyes were of worry, and some of a form of sadistic happiness.
"I don't feel too safe today, Phoenix."
"Just keep walking, Little one. Nobody's gonna hurt you while I'm in arms reach. Just don't wander off now."
Walking to their lockers, the girl across from them watched them walk up with some strange nervous look in her eye. The duo turned to open their lockers as some other students in the hallway walked closer than usual. Phoenix glanced over his shoulder and noticed a silver glimmer. Quickly, he made a swift movement between Garnet and the girl, as a loud, heartbreaking "bang" Echoed through the hallways of the early morning, snowy school..

Chapter 5: No More Blood To Bleed
The very force of the shot pushed the girl back into the locker, and she dropped the gun. On the opposite side of the hallway, Phoenix bumped back also, falling into Garnet's arms and they slid down the lockers, a small dark red spatter behind them from the impact. Garnet was unwounded, but Phoenix... He wasn't too lucky. People around them rushed, calling 9-1-1, dragging the other girl away, and more. Although, Garnet was far to concerned with something else. Her arms wrapped tightly around Phoenix's torso, she held him as close as she could, watching a dark red pool grow underneath them. Tears streamed down her face.
"Hey, bunny rabbit?" Phoenix seemed to choke out, "You alive back there, or should I just bleed out on purpose?"
"NO! I'm here! Don't die, please?" She whimpered.
He laughed and tried to smile, but his condition left a morbid sense over the moment. "If you promise, I promise."
"I promise..."
"Then I do too, sweetheart.."
Some paramedics walked in and started handling the situation. They tried to do a lot of work before moving him, including transferring blood and stopping the bleeding. Garnet's blood type just happened to match his, so she gave as much as they let her. They kept trying to reassure her, but their expressions had a hint inside which made her believe this was it, and she couldn't do anything but watch. She followed him and held his hand, at least until the ambulance. Hooking him up to the machines, they told her she couldn't get in with them. No room in the small vehicle for her. As they finished hooking him up, just as they were closing the door, Garnet heard the most heartbreaking sound possible- A long, continuous beep...
She went home after that, laying in her bed with clean clothes, holding a stuffed animal he had given her. A box sat in the corner with the clothes she wore that day. It seemed like days, or weeks may have gone by, a cold chill in her arms.. Is this the ending you expected?

Chapter 6: The Not So Happy Ending?
Garnet sat at home, clinging to a stuffed animal she had been given to by her true love, Phoenix. A cold chill ran through her heart, a bitter taste on her lips from that last kiss. A dark red memory of a pool of blood, and the disturbing sound of a flat-line. It seemed that life was just a structure built to fall apart, and this time it was chosen for her. Imagine finding the person that can really make you think, "I am understood," and seeing them be pulled away. She had heard no news since then, and everyone seemed to stop talking about it all at once. She had decided, being without the one who compliments her perfectly, it isn't worth it. She got up from her bed, and left her house.
Sitting on the curb on main street, the white snow was a mucky brown now, and scattered with salt. Black tar could be seen through the holes in the snowy blanket. Every car that passed splashed a murky and slushy snow onto her shoes.
The daytime was disappearing by the time she moved again. The snow had picked back up and her fingers and toes were so cold they hurt. Standing up, she looked at every car in traffic.
She counted to ten and stepped into the street, in front of a car. Covering her ears and closing here eyes tightly, she heard a screech of tires...
Then nothing. And no, not like a "dead" nothing, but nothing happened for a second. She was still cold, and headlights were upon her. The car had stopped before it hit her.
She heard a door open, and someone stepped out of the car, yelling. She uncovered her ears a bit, and then felt hands on her, dragging her off of the street and over to the sidewalk again. "Jeez, bunny rabbit, it's only been about a week and you have to jump into traffic?"
The voice.. the words. Who called her bunny rabbit? A few moments passed, and the shock of the moment sunk in. A strange feeling hit her harder than any car ever could have, right in the chest. she knew this voice, and she replied to it, full of shock.
"Phoenix!!!" She nearly screamed, throwing her arms around his neck and holding him tightly, pressing her lips to his. He nearly fell off balance at first, but laughed a bit inside and held her back.
After the moment ended, he held his side, and made a face. "Ow? I'm not at 100% yet, little one."
"You're the little one."
"Um, you're like, what, almost a foot shorter than me?"He laughed, showing their difference with his hands.
She made a face, a sub-scowl, but it was overcome immediately with her joy once more.
"Anyways, I WAS just going to your house, so I'll walk you home," he said, waving to the car and watching it pull away. "Remember what I said in the school? I promised not to die."
"But.. but I saw your life thingy go to a flat-line! You died!"
"Damn straight! I fought Death for you and came back. A true phoenix never dies."
She giggled. "Fine, just don't do it again, okay?"
"I promise."
They walked back to her house, holding each other's hands. He scolded her for staying in the cold too long, and she pointed out he had done the same just over a week earlier. They agreed they were equal.
When they reached her door, he said to her, "Hey, Garnet?"
"Hm?" She said, with a high pitched, yet adorable squeak.
He pulled her close and said, "I'm in love with you, and I always will be." Then pushed close to her, kissing her again, in the snowy, cold, winter night.
Okay, so maybe it's not so "Not so" happy of an ending, but I have to keep the interest, don't I? Maybe one day, I'll be lucky enough to have a girl like Garnet, and you'll be with the person who compliments you perfectly. This is just a story to show, any day could be your last. Don't waste your precious minutes and seconds waiting to go and be with the one who's perfect for you, because they might just pass by when you're immobile. So I ask again, Is this the ending you expected?
